Books

There are lots of lists of the 'best' children's books of all time, but most TV quiz questions appear to focus on a very 'traditional' sub-set of books, characters, etc.

You have to start somewhere and I've decided to start with
Publishers Weekly's list of 'All-Time Bestselling Children's Books'.

Way out on the top of the hardbacks list is
The Poky Little Puppy, written by the US writer Janette Sebring Lowrey (1892-1986). I had never heard off this book despite it being first published in 1942. Poky Little Puppy is one of five puppies of undetermined breed. He is the only one to always avoid being scolded, and he always manages to eat desserts such a rice pudding and chocolate custard. But at the end he is late, misses out on the strawberry shortcake, and goes to bed feeling "very sorry for himself".

On the other hand, second on the list is a book I had heard of, The Tale of Peter Rabbit (1902) by the English writer Helen Beatrix Potter (1855-1943). It's all about the mischievous Peter Rabbit being chased about the garden of Mr. McGregor. Widowed mother, Mrs. Josephine Rabbit, with sisters Flopsy, Mopsy, and Cottontail, and Peter's cousin Benjamin Bunny and his farther Mr. Bouncer Bunny. She wrote The Tale of Benjamin Bunny in 1904, then The Tale of Jemina Puddle-Duck in 1908, which was a play on Little Red Riding Hood with the duck and the bad "foxy-whiskered gentleman" Mr. Tod (The Tale of Mr. Tod was published in 1912). The Tale of Squirrel Nutkin was published in 1903 and included the owl Old Brown, and the The Tale of Tom Kitten was published in 1907 and included Tom's sisters Moppet and Mittens, their mother, Mrs. Tabitha Twitchit, and Mr. Drake Puddle-Duck with the Puddle-Ducks. Other characters of Beatrix Potter include a hedgehog Mrs. Tiggy-Winkle (1905), a frog Mr. Jeremy Fisher (1906), the less than pleasant rats Mr. Samuel Whiskers and wife Anna Maria, shopkeepers Ginger, a yellow tomcat, and Pickles, a terrier (1909), the woodmouse Mrs. Thomasina Tittlemouse (1910), the squirrel Timmy Tiptoes with the mischievous chipmunk Chippy Hackee, and there is Jonny Town-Mouse and the country mouse Timmy Willie (1918). The Tale of Pigling Bland (1913) introduced a whole new series of characters, the old sow Aunt Pettitoes, the well-behaved sow named Spot, two boars named Pigling Bland and Alexander, as well as the evil farmer Peter Thomas Piperson, and the black Berkshire sow Pig-wig. Beatrix Potter's last character Little Pig Robinson (1930) with her aunts Miss Procas and Miss Dorcas.
Beatrix Potter studies and drew fungi, and was well respected in the field of
mycology. Much of her lands were left to the National Trust, and are now part of the Lake District National Park.

In third place we have
Tootle (1945) by Gertrude Crampton (1909-1996), another book and author I have never heard off. Tootle is set in the US, and is a baby locomotive attending train school. The key message is "stay on the rails". She also wrote Scuffy the Tugboat (1946) which came in 8th on sales. Scuffy is a toy tugboat that wants to escape the bathtub. But in a stream he is carried away to a big river. Fortunately he is rescued and he is happy to return to his bathtub.

In fourth place we see
Green Eggs and Ham (1960) by one of the most prolific authors, Dr. Seuss (Theodor Seuss 'Ted' Geisel, 1904-1991). Green Eggs and Ham is a beginners book and only uses 50 simple words such as I, if, in, me… The Cat in the Hat (1957) uses 236 words and came in at 9th place. The story is simple. Sally and her brother, Conrad, hear a round bump, and find the Cat in the Hat. The Cat is tall has a red and white stripped hat and a red bow tie. The Cat proposes some entertainment, but the pet fish refuses. The Cat brings in a big red box containing Thing One and Thing Two, both with blue hair and red suits. The Things make a mess, but then the fish sees the children's mother out of the window. The Cat captures the Things in a net, puts them back in the red box. And then The Cat comes in a machine that picks up everything and cleans the house. Mother asks the children what they did, and the last line is the question "What would you do if your mother asked you"?". Another very popular character is the Grinch in How the Grinch Stole Christmas (1964). The Grinch is a hairy, pot-bellied, pear-shaped, snub-nosed create with a cat-like face, and is coloured an avocado green. He lives on Mount Crumpit, near Whoville inhabited by the warm-hearted Whos. The story is the attempt of the Grinch to steal all the Christmas-themed items from the homes of people in Whoville. But he learns that Christmas is not just about money and presents.
